In January 2021, PowerMore successfully put into operation Harmonic filter system for the Hot rolling mill factory of the Hoa Phat Dung Quat steel complex. The Filter eliminated harmonic distortions in the medium voltage system and improved the overall power quality as well as operation safety for the complex.
The hot-rolled coil (HRC) factory in Hoa Phat Dung Quat is thin slab caster and hot-rolled mill with total capacity of 3.5 million tonnes a year for Hoa Phat Dung Quat Integrated Steel Complex.
This production line utilizes medium-voltage variable frequency drives with Active Front End (AFE) technology to minimize harmonics at the 5th and 7th current harmonics compared to traditional variable frequency drives when operating at high power. However, these drives are also generating voltage harmonic at higher frequencies when in no-load mode. These voltage harmonics at higher frequencies pose a significant risk to devices directly connected to the power grid, potentially causing resonance within the system and voltage fluctuations leading to equipment failures. The danger escalates as these voltage harmonic peaks at the 35kV level, a voltage level interconnecting multiple factories in the complex. To ensure power quality and operational safety for the entire system, the installation of a harmonic filtering system to mitigate these harmonics at the source is necessary and critical.
In July 2020, the contract for the design, supply, and installation of a 35kV medium-voltage harmonic filter system between PowerMore and Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Joint Stock Company has been signed.

After 5 months of implementation, supply, and installation, in January 2021, the 35kV medium-voltage harmonic filter system with a capacity of 5.5MVAr was successfully put into operation, achieving results beyond expectations. This included reducing the total harmonic distortion of voltage (THDu) on the 35kV busbar from 25% down to below 2%.
