[Case Study] ENHANCING POWER QUALITY IN THE F&B INDUSTRY: THE JOURNEY OF VIETNAM’S LEADING DAIRY ENTERPRISE

Industry: Food & Beverage
Location: Thanh Hoa & Ho Chi Minh City
Installed equipment: Revcon RHF Active Harmonic Filter

CONTEXT AND CHALLENGES: HARMONICS THREATEN THE STABILITY OF F&B PRODUCTION LINES

In the food and beverage (F&B) industry, where production lines operate 24/7 and even a few minutes of downtime can result in losses of hundreds of millions of Vietnamese đồng (VND), power quality is a critical factor determining operational stability and safety.

One of Vietnam’s largest dairy conglomerates, with a network of plants across the country, faced a major challenge when preparing for a re-evaluation of its ISO 50001 energy management certification. Real-world measurements indicated that the levels of current harmonic distortion (THDi) and voltage harmonic distortion (THDv) in many areas exceeded the allowable limits specified by Circular 05/2025/BCT (Ministry of Industry and Trade). The primary sources of these excessive harmonics were variable frequency drives (VFDs), air compressors, filling lines, and highly automated processing systems.

This situation not only affected equipment lifespan and voltage stability, but also posed the risk of losing the ISO certification – which could disrupt production operations and increase maintenance costs.

A CUSTOM-TAILORED POWER QUALITY SOLUTION FOR EACH PRODUCTION LINE

Recognizing the importance of controlling harmonics in automated production lines, PowerMore worked closely with the plant’s technical team from the initial survey and measurement stage through to root-cause analysis and the design of a suitable solution for each load area.

Instead of applying a one-size-fits-all approach, PowerMore deployed an Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) system by the German brand Revcon using a multi-point architecture, custom-designed for the variable load characteristics of the F&B sector.

The solution was engineered in compliance with IEEE 519 and TT05/2025/BCT standards, with a total filtering capacity ranging from 55 A up to 750 A, distributed across the filling, processing, and air compression areas, as well as the main distribution panels.

Surveying and power quality measurements were conducted at the main electrical panels to ensure the final solution was optimally designed to suit the plant’s actual operating conditions.

PowerMore’s engineering team then fine-tuned the filter parameters at each installation point to ensure effective harmonic suppression without affecting production output. After the system went into operation, PowerMore continued to partner with the plants’ technical teams, providing ongoing support and regular maintenance to ensure the equipment operates reliably in the long term – reinforcing the commitment to not just install, but operate together with the client.

ACTUAL MEASUREMENT RESULTS: 96% REDUCTION IN CURRENT HARMONICS, SYSTEM MEETS DOMESTIC & INTERNATIONAL POWER QUALITY STANDARDS

Following installation and acceptance testing, independent measurement results showed a significant reduction in current harmonics (THDi) and voltage harmonics (THDv) across all areas. Harmonic levels were brought within compliance of both the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s TT05/2025/BCT regulation and the international IEEE 519 standard.
