CTR Vina | Active Harmonic Filter Deployment for VFD Systems

1. Project Overview

  • Project Name: Harmonic Filtering Solution for CTR Vina Factory
  • Project Summary: PowerMore successfully installed and commissioned a hybrid harmonic filtering system at the CTR Vina factory. The solution combines passive and active harmonic filtering technologies to mitigate harmonic distortion generated by a large number of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) operating within the factory’s electrical system.
  • Industry / Sector: Industrial Manufacturing / Power Quality
  • Project Type: Harmonic Filtering and Power Quality Improvement Solution

2. PowerMore’s Scope of Work

For this project, PowerMore was responsible for the following key activities:

  • Assessing the existing electrical system and proposing a harmonic filtering solution tailored to the factory’s operating conditions.
  • Supplying a hybrid harmonic filtering system combining passive and active filtering technologies.
  • Installing the harmonic filtering system at the CTR Vina factory.
  • Commissioning the system and putting it into full operation.

3. Project Highlights & Business Value

The CTR Vina factory operates a large number of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) as part of its production processes. While VFDs provide significant benefits in terms of motor control and energy efficiency, their widespread use can introduce substantial harmonic distortion into the electrical network.

At CTR Vina, the elevated harmonic levels were affecting the reactive power compensation system as well as other electrical equipment within the facility.

Prior to the implementation of the harmonic filtering solution, the factory’s reactive power compensation system experienced issues including excessive noise and overheating. High harmonic distortion also created additional risks, such as increased heating in transformers and power cables, accelerated equipment degradation, and a higher probability of electrical failures caused by voltage waveform distortion.

With extensive expertise in power quality solutions, PowerMore implemented a hybrid harmonic filtering system that combines the advantages of both passive and active filtering technologies.

The solution was designed to reduce harmonic distortion across the electrical system while supporting more stable and reliable operation of the factory’s power infrastructure. By mitigating harmonic currents, the system also helps reduce unnecessary electrical stress on transformers, cables, compensation equipment, and other connected loads.

Following installation and commissioning, harmonic distortion levels at the CTR Vina factory were significantly reduced. The achieved results comply with Vietnam’s power quality requirements under Circular No. 30/2019/TT-BCT and are also aligned with internationally recognized IEC and IEEE standards.
