3. Project Highlights & Value Delivered
The QSP Rolling Mill at the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Integrated Iron and Steel Complex is a thin-slab casting and hot strip rolling facility with an annual production capacity of 3.5 million tonnes. The plant utilizes production technology supplied by DANIELI, Italy. As a modern thin-slab casting and rolling line, it commenced production operations in early 2020.
The production line uses medium-voltage variable frequency drives based on AFE (Active Front End) technology. Compared with conventional drives, AFE technology can significantly reduce 5th- and 7th-order current harmonics when operating at high loads. However, under no-load operating conditions, these AFE drives can generate higher-order voltage harmonics.
This characteristic presents a significant risk to the electrical system. High-order voltage harmonics may create resonance within the power network, resulting in sudden voltage fluctuations and increasing the risk of equipment damage or electrical incidents. The potential impact is particularly critical when harmonic distortion occurs on the 35 kV busbar, which interconnects multiple plants across the entire industrial complex.
To address the urgent requirements for power quality and operational safety, PowerMore implemented a 35 kV medium-voltage harmonic filtering system designed to mitigate harmonics directly at their source.
The solution was engineered using a high-pass harmonic filter configuration, targeting the 5th, 11th, and 23rd harmonic orders.
Following five months of equipment supply, installation, testing, and commissioning, the 35 kV, 5.5 MVAr medium-voltage harmonic filter was successfully put into operation in January 2021.
The project delivered a significant improvement in power quality. Total voltage harmonic distortion (THDu) at the 35 kV busbar was reduced from approximately 25% to below 2%, helping stabilize the electrical network, improve power quality, and enhance operational safety across the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Integrated Iron and Steel Complex.
