2. PowerMore’s Scope of Work

Under this project, PowerMore was responsible for the following key scope:

  • Supplying harmonic filter reactors for the shunt compensation system.
  • Coordinating with Power Transmission Company No. 4 (PTC4) and other relevant parties during system commissioning and energization.
  • Providing equipment as part of the broader project to install shunt capacitor banks across the Southern Vietnam transmission grid.

3. Project Highlights & Value

On 21 December 2016, the contract signing ceremony for the supply of capacitor banks, primary electrical equipment and related materials under the project “Installation of Shunt Capacitor Banks on the Southern Vietnam Transmission Grid” was held at Power Transmission Company No. 4. PowerMore participated in the project as the supplier of harmonic filter reactors for the shunt compensation system.

The combination of shunt capacitor banks and PowerMore harmonic filter reactors contributed to a reduction in active power losses of approximately 2.6 MW. Based on project data and an average annual operating time of 3,000 hours, this corresponds to approximately 7,800 MWh of avoided energy losses per year, equivalent to an estimated economic benefit of approximately VND 12.496 billion annually.

Following construction and installation, Eastern Power Transmission 2 coordinated with the relevant departments of Power Transmission Company No. 4 and other project partners, including PowerMore Ltd., to energize and commission the shunt capacitor systems at the 220 kV My Phuoc Substation on 27 June 2017 and the 220 kV Tay Ninh Substation on 29 June 2017.

Under the project configuration, each substation was equipped with two shunt capacitor banks, with each bank rated at 50 MVAr. At the 220 kV My Phuoc Substation in particular, the commissioning of the two capacitor banks generated significant value in terms of reduced transmission losses and operating efficiency, as the substation supplies electricity to a major industrial area in Binh Duong Province.

The successful energization and operation of the shunt capacitor systems at the My Phuoc and Tay Ninh 220 kV substations played an important role in maintaining voltage within the required range under different operating conditions. The installation also contributed to improved power quality, higher supply reliability, more efficient active power transmission and lower losses across the regional power system.

The equipment was installed within the premises of existing substations to reduce reactive power flow, increase the network’s active power transfer capability and minimize energy losses, thereby improving overall operating economics. At the same time, the compensation system supports voltage regulation and stabilization, helping maintain power quality and extend the service life of electrical equipment.

These installations represent five of the eight 110 kV shunt capacitor banks included in the overall project. In total, the project comprised eight 110 kV capacitor banks installed at the 220 kV Long An, Cao Lanh, My Phuoc, Tay Ninh and Xuan Loc substations, providing a combined installed capacity of 400 MVAr.
