2. PowerMore’s Scope of Work

PowerMore was responsible for the following key activities:

  • Participating in the acceptance testing process as the reactor manufacturer’s representative.
  • Supplying the VSR Variable Shunt Reactor for the shunt compensation system.
  • Providing technical guidance during reactor installation.
  • Providing operational guidance after the reactor was integrated into the power system.

3. Project Highlights & Value

The installation of the shunt reactor and 22kV switching station formed part of the subproject “Rehabilitation and Upgrade of the Power Distribution Network in Ly Son Island District, Quang Ngai Province.” The project was financed through a KfW loan and assigned by EVNCPC to CPCCREB for project management, with a total investment of more than VND 18.2 billion.

The shunt reactor plays an important role in maintaining the stable and safe operation of the submarine cable supplying electricity to Ly Son Island. Under peak-load conditions, when the system voltage is lower, disconnecting the shunt reactor helps improve the voltage profile and reduce electrical losses. During low-load conditions, the reactor is switched into service to absorb the reactive power generated by the lightly loaded cable, helping maintain voltage within the required operating range.

To improve power supply reliability and provide more flexible voltage control for the submarine cable system, CPCCREB proposed the use of a Variable Shunt Reactor (VSR).

Once energized and commissioned, the VSR became an important component of the submarine cable system. It helps protect the cable against transient overvoltage associated with switching operations and reduces the risk of harmonic resonance that could adversely affect the insulation of the submarine cable.

In addition to its automatic control functionality, the VSR can also be operated manually through the dedicated control cabinet supplied with the equipment. The system also supports remote supervision and control through the SCADA system, enabling operators to monitor and manage reactor operation more efficiently.

This project marked the first installation of an automatically adjustable shunt reactor using VSR technology in Vietnam. PowerMore supplied the equipment and provided technical guidance throughout the installation, commissioning, and operational phases.

Following the commissioning of the shunt reactor and 22kV switching station, power switching operations could be performed directly through Circuit Breaker 474 at the switching station, instead of being carried out from the mainland side at the Dung Quat 220kV Substation.

This configuration significantly improved the flexibility of grid operation and provided greater convenience for the management, maintenance, and repair of the power distribution network on Ly Son Island.
